Can a computer using windows/linux get infected by a virus by merely copying of virus infected file?

i mean if i 'know' that a file is virus infected and i still download it from a website (or my email) or i copy it from a friend's hard disk (or cd/dvd) on to my computer, is there any theoretical possibility of my computer getting infected with that virus *assuming that i do not execute/open that file*

How do you save a Windows Live Answers question page with comments and everything?

I mean not just a plain-text file. I mean the whole page, with the same format. When you try to save it as an MIME HTML (MHTML) file, the comments don't get saved. The comments get saved in a plain-text file, but it's hard to read, because there's no format, and it's almost illegible/unreadable.

the details of this file as given by my firewall (zonelabs zonealarm) are-C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchost.exe-Generic Host Process for Win32 Services-5.1.2600.2180 (xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)i have noticed that whenever i want to connect to internet, this file must be allowed access to be able to establish a connection. but i fear that if i allow complete access to internet by this file (so that firewall won't alert me when this file tries to access internet) any vulnerability in this file may compromise security of my computer
