You put it directly into the transmission... pull out the dip stick, (the same place where you check the level of the fluid), put the funnel in and pour in what you are low... be sure to check what is needed prior to adding... too much can be as bad as too little.
in addition, check the smell of the fluid to see if smells burnt, feel the fluid to ensure there are no metal filings, and the color to ensure that it is clean... good fluid will be pinkish in color, clean with no debris, and clean smelling (no burnt smell).
