How do you get your licence back after a second DUI???

My boyfriend got his second DUI in 2004 and has not been driving because we coundn;t afford the classes. He now has enrolled but with the first DUI he had to have the breatholizer in our car for a year and have an sr22. We just don't know who to ask what to do and where to start??
Puddingtang:

Go to your local DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) Where they issue Driver's licenses, each state has different laws and regulations when it comes to the reinstatement of driving privileges after a DUI conviction. But first, you may have to go to your state courthouse or the courthouse where he was convicted of the charges in order to obtain his driving Abstract, and then ask them what he needs to do to reinstate his driving privileges.

Robert:

yep , keep those alcoholics driving Vicky! WTG! If he was recieving treatment or going to meetings, he would have some real life friends that would be willing to help him, once he has shown a real desire to stay sober. Littlewing ~22 yrs sober

Puddingtang:

The court officials should be able to tell him what he needs to do to reinstate his driving privileges, judgments usually may include a court appointed alcohol assessment, counseling, driving classes, and fines. Once he has proved completion of penalties and fines, then he can obtain the application for a driver's license at the local DMV. Good luck, remember.....only 1 alcoholic beverage will test positive when you blow into the breathalyzer. Best learn from his mistake, and not let there be a third time.

Jayne:

Thank you

Robert:

yeah, and I have some swamp land you might be interested in buying there Vick-- drive carefully

Robert:

rio- this is personal, so I wont say "dont take this personally". You sound here like alot of people get 2 DUIs. Normal social drinkers, dont get DUIs . period. You really need to look at why you are activly caretaking your BFs problems, its HIM who has the real problem, its not up to you to figure out his solutions. Your BF has a drinking problem, if nobody else will tell you- I will. Get mad or whatever. It needed to be said.

Jayne:

Just to let you know, I appreciate the honesty BUT when he got this DUI it was a huge eye opener for him and he no longer drinks. This was almost four years ago now and since then he, no we have grown up a lot. We have 3 beautiful children and the reason I am trying to figure out this solution to this is because he is at work providing for his children. Maybe you should consider how long ago this happened before making judgment.

Robert:

ok hope he has a support system, very few people end up staying sober without one, but it does happen occaisionally. For your 2nd DUI, you can enroll and pay for the classes, and go get your license- (this is Fla law, by the way)-then, you have a certain amount of time in which to complete your classes, cant remember if its 6 months or a year. When you go to get your license, you present the receipt for the enrollment in the DUI class to the DMV or License place. Better to check w/them, to see if he has any warrants or anything he didnt know about-

The Mommy:

I have to agree with you littlewing it scares me. I realize people can change but alcoholism doesn't go away......hopefully he was just immature and careless and not truly an alcoholic. I guess it can happen. Thank you for being brave enough to stand up for what you believe.

Gaylyn:

It sounds like your BF has a drinking problem and should probably concentrate on fixing that problem rather than trying to get his license back and possibly getting into the same situation again and hurting himself, or God forbid, anyone else.

for me? I'd rather keep him off the road.

Jayne:

please read my comment to littlewing

Gaylyn:

Sounds like he has taken the appropriate steps to correct his behavior...that is truly wonderful. A lot of people take many many DUI's before changing.

I'm sure you are very pleased that he has made these changes.

my apologies that I don't have any help on how to deal with the police in this matter.

The Mommy:

I'm sure that my answer won't make everyone happy but I think that his main concern should be his drinking problem and how that he is not only endangering his life by drinking and driving but the innocent lives of others as well.

The Mommy:

I have read your comment to Littlewing and I would have to agree with her he needs to continue going to meetings and have a very strong support system. My uncle is an alcoholic who every time he is in a jam....quits drinking-sure he does until the next time. I love him but my message is the same to him. You have a problem and only you (no one around them) can fix it. He endangers himself, his children and every other innocent person he passes on the road........You say he's changed but he has already had two chances and two strikes....what will happen on the third strike?

Jayne:

I would just like to say that he has never endangered his children as he hasn't drank OR drove in almost 4 years and our oldest son is only 3.

The Mommy:

Hopefully he was never a true alcoholic and he just suffered from immaturity and carelessness. Alcoholism never goes away, it can be controlled but it isn't easy even with the best support systems. I'm not talking down to you or your boyfriend but I've lost a dear friend to a drunk driver and it's not something that I take lightly. I wish everyone that felt the need to drink would call a cab, sleep in their car but don't risk your life or the lives of others. Good luck to you and your family.

Still Changing:

Heres a true story. My real cousin parked cars for a hotel. He had a lot of D.U.I.s.but we have our own limo from my band and a friend didn't drink at all.As long as he was dropped off and picked up this hotel let him keep his job.On a foot note do not ever have a person park your car at a hotel.
