You can beat the estimates if you drive like a "little old lady" (no, not all little old ladies drive this way, but you get the idea). Imagine yourself on a bicycle. You wouldn't floor it when the light turns red, you would slow down when going up hill, and you would quit peddling as soon as you saw a red light, even if it was a block away. I drive like this and have extended my expected 29mpg to 37, so I know it works. Just expect to get teased now and then, and the occasional finger may be flashed your way.

Oh, and pump those tires up to max, keep the oil changed (filter too), lay off the air conditioner, and if you can, keep the windows up when on the highway.

This is the best answer. The size of the tank matters and the particular make/model of the car. There are so many variations to look at. Not all small and mid-sized cars are alike, just like all pickups are not alike. There are big variations in gas mileage.

Sheldon I think MBC meant 800 mile to a tank, some of them have a huge gas tank because of where they were designed to be used.

oh yes I forgot it is probably diesel also they do get better millage than gas driven, and at just under 21 mpg you aren't getting bad millage for a 91 vehicle about what I would expect.

There was a Mercedes diesel (forgot the model) that had a large tank and could go about 600 miles per tank.

Nope. Not normal, but it depends what you have for a small car i suppose. everything is relative. i get 350 - 400 with my KIA spectra5 and that's not even the smallest kia.
