That depends, Ski. Are you confident of finding that "something else" with all the layoffs, downsizing and company closures? If you have enough to retire and enjoy yourself and still afford your medical insurance and have enough to live on, fine. If not, maybe consider keeping your job for just a little while longer ....

I am playing with the thoughts but I have a little while before I make a firm decision.

What would you move on to? I would think it wasn't such a hot idea unless you have accrued enough benefits to at least pay the rent.
I mean, not everyone is a great author, and writing a book takes a long time before you finally get something from it, and fishing just isn't going to make it, either, so, I really do think it's much better to just work until you have enough benefits to at least survive on.

Hello Shenandoah I have time in and security I just want o keep on working but i am tiring of the field after spending so much time in it. I have other things on the board I just have to decide whether to give up what I am doing now and leave all the benefits of having seniority behind to do something else in a different environment
. I have plenty of time to decide but I think this raises a good point of discussion not only for myself but for others pondering the question.

yeah. If you can, and it sounds good, then do, I suppose. But, if you like your job, then don't. My grandmother worked way beyond 70.

I did retire 1.5 years ago....at a time when the economy was still at its boom so I did so confidently. My timing was dictated by health reasons. Now I am nervous!!!! And am looking for some work but am also nervous about what going back to work will do to my health. BUt I am not going to rely on social benefits that's for sure!

I still have my health but I am thinking of moving on but I have a while before I have to make a decision but it is in the near future.

I would not even think about it now.

A friend advised me to retire as soon as I could, and I did. He retired young, so, little money, but he had 15 years of retirement before cancer got him. I quit at 55 and am now not able to do all the things I could several years ago, so my wife and I had a lot of fun we would have missed out on.
If you can retire, in my opinion, you should.

I did retire at 58 and I'm very glad I did. If I'd have waited until 2008 when I started drawing Social Security, I probably would have been too scared to leave with the economy in the dump.
