Do some research and see what others are doing in your field. Most custom work that I know of charges for parts and/or materials, and labour separately. Labour is where you can really make your profits. Of course, you will need to determine what your hourly rate is where you will profit, but not scare potential customers off.

It's the same for bidding on anything. You have to know what your doing. Do you? It's more complicated than layering paint. What is the product cost, your g and a cost. How much time is it going to take, how much is that time worth. What freebies are thrown in as lost leeders to help secure the work. So write it all out..material cost plus an average of 15% markup. shop time, how many days of power, air, heat, booth and lights. How many hours.. etc.....it's easy....ya just gotta take the time to do it.

Two things...

Know your competition in your area. Be a detective and inquire about a paint job and ask about different scenarios and see what they are charging, and if this comes with a warranty etc.

Know what your material costs will be and decide what YOU want to be paid for your time, a flat fee vs. hourly, used in your decision-making.
