My car got hot and died. When I put water in it, it poured back out of it. What's wrong?
ZenDisaster:

Pour out from where the bottom or steamed out? You don't put water or radiator fluid in a hot engine. You have a good chance of getting scalded from steam. If you put radiator fluid in the that steam can get in your eyes and cause some problems up to blindness.

If the fluid is pouring out from the bottom or even the top, it could be the radiator hoses - one might have broken or be cracked and when your engine heats up the pressure built up opens the crack in the hose enough to spit out liquid.

If you were driving along and your radiator hose broke, you would see a lot of steam when it broke. It could be your thermostat is stuck in the closed position and water is not circulating properly causing the fluid to over heat.

goldwyn:

I'm not a car expert, but if the water poured out of the bottom, there is a hole in your radiator.

Ron-QnA-MVP:

Hi Crystal,
It could be as simple as a burst radiator hose. Careful very careful when opening a raditor that is hot.

I'm Grandmas pride & joy:

This is very common for an overheating radiator to "pour back out" the radiator bacame so hot that when you poured water into it, the water immediately boiled causing it to gush out. If when you opened the rad. cap there was lots of antifreeze (or water) already or still in there, then you likely have a thermostat or water pump problem. Hope this helps.

You know how we always say "see your doctor". Well, it's time to see your mechanic!

crazy:

If it "Poured back out of it" there is probably a problem with a hose, or the water pump seal is blown out.

john:

Crystal, I have an alternate possibility, which I hope I am wrong about. I'd really know for sure, if you could tell me where the water comes out from....hose, radiator, or worst case...the engine block itself. There's what is called "freeze plugs" on the engine block. They close off the holes in the block jacket to contain the circulating water, this is what cools the engine.

If the water is coming from the engine block, then it has blown a freeze plug. Now the possibly worst part... if the engine overheated too much, the engine head may have gotten warped. ($$$) The head is what the valve cover fits on top of.

As I said before, I hope that I AM WRONG. Good luck to ya!!

john:

Correcting myself, the valve manifold sits on top of the head.
