I've heard that the story behind Thanksgiving never happened. Is that true?

Please, accompany your answer with links...........
Kenny93101:

And yet, I find that hard to believe considering the Native Americans weren't on wonderful terms with the Pilgrims at the time. That's why I ask.

Eric`s cafe:

But the pilgrims showed native americans a lot of new things, so the native americans might have endured a few meals to fight about new ways to hunt.

Kenny93101:

I think you have that mixed up... the Pilgrims landed in need of aid, heck, the first colony of Roanoke vanished without a trace!

Kenny93101:

Not really a historical document Ceecee, just more alleged history,

Eric`s cafe:

there's no way to know for sure if anything that happened back then happened, they had no camera's.
It's just like people doubting Shakespeare actually wrote any of his famous plays because he has no record of education. There's no way of know now though, so there's no real reason to doubt it happened unless someone has a time machine to go back and check. Even then, they wouldn't tell us.
I'm sorry if that didn't makes sense, I forgot what I was saying half way through that.

Kenny93101:

It made sense, but I think that I would rather doubt something first than accept it as axiom.

Eric`s cafe:

but you get to celebrate with family and friends, for me that would overpower the want for it to be true, and I'm a vegetarian.

Kenny93101:

Well I didn't mean the holiday, but the alleged history behind it.

Lostadmin:

Russ:

Squanto, the leader of the Wampanaog people, spoke English well, as he had alresdy been there. The Pilgrims were not the first Europeans to land in that area.

Mountainman:

If you can, watch the show by C-span network (the first of a series of 32 programs) about the founding and sustaining of Plimouth Plantation. A Re-enactor portrays Gov. William Bradford; the director of Plimouth Plantation is on the program; and Linda Coombs, a member of the Wampanoags, all take questions from callers. It was first aired in 2001. It's an excellent program, but still the leaves the question of the first Thanksgiving up in the air. The first year of Plimouth Plantation's existence (1620) saw about half of the settlers succumb to starvation, murder and illness. The Pilgrims had an uneasy treaty with the Wampanoags, as well as with other tribes, and they had peaceful times as well as troublesome times due to the improper conduct of a few Pilgrims. After a bountiful harvest (the first allegedly in 1621) a celebratory feast was undoubtedly had, since that was tradition, and supposedly there were Wampanoags present. Most of the story of the first Thanksgiving is mythological. According to Linda Coombs, Squanto was kidnapped and taken to Spain, where he escaped, made his way to England, learned English, made his way back to his native land, and was used by Massasoit as an interpreter. Bradford wrote a book of the history of Plimouth Plantation, but apparently makes no mention of the first Thanksgiving, possibly because it wasn't considered to be any different from any other harvest feast. The Wamponoags considered the Pilgrims intruders (which they were) in their already well established nation, while the Pilgrims and other settlers on Cape Cod claimed to be settling and building a "new" nation out of the wilderness. As always, there are two sides to the story, and history always seems to get twisted, and it's something which will likely remain unresolved and controversial.

TonyaAnn:

Is that really the issue? Regardless; we take a day to give thanks to God for all he has given us. I believe it was Abraham Lincoln who made Thanksgiving an official holiday here in the US.

Ssfury:

Here you go....I found that the tribe that was at Plymouth was honored: http://abcnews.go.com/US/wireStory?id=2879737
That way it isn't JUST from the imigrants' documentation...I found lots of that, I wanted to find it from the Native American's heritage. :)

Ssfury:

I don't think it hit the newspapers then, and I don't think they had cameras then.
As far as Native Americans and imigrants never sitting down to celebrate their friendship with food.....I'm pretty sure that happened sometime around the end of a harvest season. :)
