This has been argued for years as to whether a car uses more gas when using A/C versus having all four windows open and fighting extra wind resistance. I have a car that has a trip computer that gives the average gas mileage. It does not show any significant difference.
I've had two different mechanics, each whom I trust, tell me that it does take more gas to run your automobile with the air conditioner on, but only a tiny amount more. Nothing to bother about.
