Everyone is trying to save what they can right now, if we were all rich we could all "Go Green" but the average person is hard put just to get by these days. My daughter is selling her car because it has become too expensive for her to drive, go to University, pay for her apartment and eat! She will be using her bike to get around and that is not as easy as it sounds.
HAK, I sympathise with you. I COULD bike to work, about 20 min, but it is too dangerous to bike. Bike injury rate is 20% higher than last year. But is this because we bought into high gas and insurance, and vehicle rates. Maybe if we all downsized, we could go back to a simpler life.
It IS dangerous and I am worried about her, she too has a 25 minute ride to University but she cannot stretch her buget any further. If we all did it we would look like Holland :) Not a bad thing, and yes I agree with you, it would be a simpler time :)
Rome, Greece, Hong Kong... the list goes on of cities choking on smog from scooters and small engine diesels. They put out very dirty pollution to say the least. And particulate matter too.

I have travelled the world and seen lots of smog. I would hate to see it all here. Luckily we have winter to tone down the scooters.

I LOOKed into this and the comparison is misleading - at least they get 1000 miles to gallon, so that moped and scooter riders aren't helping to keep America addicted to foreign oi, which then in turn sponsors terrorists like the ones who acted upon us on 9/11.
