How do I go about not being used as a PERSONAL REFERENCE?

I have a friend that insists upon using me as a personal reference on Job applications, Loan Applications and other forms. i have a problem that I know that my "friend" is a habitual liar, and an occasional thief. He is still my friend, but I have repeatedly told him that I would be brutally honest if someone should contact me. Now he has applied for a job with the company that I work for, and has put me down as a reference. What would you do?
Headache:

is that your axe in your avatar maddad? Looks like a Les Paul Special or maybe a Studio Pro. Nice playing guitar either way.
I am a strat clown myself!

MADDAD:

It is a Les Paul Studio

MADDAD:

You can see SOME of my others that I have on my Live space page. including my American made Fender Stratocaster.

Headache:

Very nice girls ya got there maddad. What year is your strat? I have a '64 which is nice as it is a pre CBS buyout fender and just sings for me. You Les Paul looks sweet as well, what is your vintage there as well. They are a bit heavy but i love my '58. I like your Ovation and I have a couple as well. I also have a Martin D-15 but usually pick up the O's when I play around the house. Have you ever played professionally?

Literally Speaking ™:

I'd tell the boss just what you told us here. You don't want to jeopardize your job in this suckass economy or anytime for that matter.

Literally Speaking ™:

Be honest with him.

MADDAD:

I have always done so in the past. I don't know if I have cost him any jobs in the past. But my Boss is a good guy. I wouldn'tt want to help get someone hired that is going to steal from him.

Literally Speaking ™:

I have another one of those off world questions, how can you associate with someone that is a liar and a thief?

I stay as far away from people like that I can, because if they lie and steal, they may lie to or steal from me, can't trust them.

MADDAD:

I try to council him about right and wrong, but it seems to fall on deaf ears. He was abandoned as a child. I guess that I don't want him to feel like I have bailed on him too.

Literally Speaking ™:

I know the feeling but sometimes ya gotta abandoned someone because they are hopeless, sometimes they will see their mistakes and straighten themselves out, the others wind up dead or in prison.

Ika:

I would be brutally honest just like you told him you would. That way, you are true to yourself, you are true to the company, and you are true to your friend. Sometimes people that have respectable character have to do that which is not enjoyed....but is the honorable thing to do.

MADDAD:

Thanks Headache. Merry Christmas.

Ika:

Thanks, and Merry Christmas to you too!!! : )

Literally Speaking ™:

I often get accused of the very same thing here on QnA when all I'm trying to be is brutally honest. hurrrumphhhh such is life.

Here's a tylenol Ө to help get rid of that headache.

:o)

Ika:

Honest and Honorable have two different meanings. A person can be honest about something they did, but that doesn't make them honorable. I'm not saying whether you are or you're not, I'm just saying there's a difference between those two words.

Literally Speaking ™:

I can assure you my honesty is completely honorable, it's up to you to decide if I am or not, perhaps once you have been here long anough to see the pattern I have you will understand.

Happy Holidays and take that damned tylenol, LOL

Ika:

Thanks, and Happy Holidays to you too!!! : )

Headache:

tell him you love him but if any one calls for a reference you will say horrible things about him

MADDAD:

Hey. Guys don't use the L word to each other. lol.

Headache:

not secure maddog?

MADDAD:

Nah. Just yankin yer chain.

Literally Speaking ™:

Another man tells me he loves me and I don't have a Bud Light in my hand he's gettin' a knuckle sandwich.

Headache:

not secure either LS? I love you man!

ÐitzyÐame:

well i would tell the company the truth

MADDAD:

I think that it would be best for everyone. Merry Christmas Sheriff.

Muttin':

When they call you, tell them that you work there and it would be a conflict of interest to answer any questions about him. You do not need your friend angry with you or for that matter your company angry. There is no reason to do anything. You will come out looking better in the eyes of both.

MADDAD:

Great advice CA.

Sunni:

Work all this out on paper.
In what definition is this guy your friend? I'd think about that and try to put that into words.
Do you have personal knowledge of his work ethic? I would explain that you don't or you do and how you do.
And I think if you just stop there and say that is pretty much all I can say 'for' them then you are professionally saying- those are the high points.
Now the thievery part -
does he have a record
or is this a sneaky suspicion?
and does your company do background checks-
if they do you are still on the hook as he has wrote your name down and you may want to explain if you didn't know them at the time
OR that you had no knowledge of this at the time
it all leads back to being honest
And the liar part
is this to get out of work
to his wife
his friends
how does this relate professionally?
So my biggest tip would be to write down what you want to say positive and keep it on a professional level.
the other stuff you know as being a friend does not relate to a professional level -
but if you think there is any real chance he will steal from the company
then when asked you will just have to give them a head shake no-

MADDAD:

Thanks. It is quite a dilemma.

Bryan:

advise the boss not to hire the guy. you can't risk losing your roof and spoon because you vouched for some one who makes lousy choices.

MADDAD:

Thanks. that's how I feel about it.
