What could be causing my Golden retriever to itch. He doesn't have flees or ticks.

I have checked the spots he itches and chews on. I see nothing there. I have heard that it could be his food so I have changed it. I haven't seen any changes. Just wondered if anyone had a similar problem with there Golden.
Bristleback:

Great answers from everyone. Thanks so much for your responses.

Evan:

He could have allergies other than a food allergy. Take him to a vet for some tests. You don't want him to get an infection from scratching.

Goldwyn:

Dry skin? Go to the pet store or Walgreen's and look for a shampoo for dry skin/hot spots/hair loss. Look for dog foods that have ingredients for the skin and coat. Fish oil pills can also help. Don't shampoo your dog too often, only about once a month as this can also lead to problems.

Goldwyn:

Hot spots can be treated easily with a topical solution. KARMA is correct about being careful and watching for secondary infections. If the problem persists, it could be mange and best treated by a vet.

Tannie:

I'm with Karma on this one. Sounds like an allergy. A vet could be more helpful. There are also a number of natural remedies that can be tried to minimize the effects of allergic reactions in pets, many are carried by commercial pet chains (Petco, Petsmart, Fosters&Smith, etc.)

Hisham:

Shampoo! try useing a shampoo that does not remove the oils in their skin as this will result in serious itching and they will scratch until they bleed/and or remove hair! talk to someone at your local pet store and get some oil based shampoo and you can also get a skin treatment to help right away! poor pup!

I have a dog that does the same thing. My vet told me that sometimes they have whats known as hot spots. There really isn't anything you can do about it. It becomes a habit and its hard for them to stop.
