age to begin electric fence puppy training ,command to come

my german shepherd is 4 months old and doesn't like to "come". Also, we have an electric fence for our other dogs. Would it be too soon to train him at 5 months,. He is large and intelligent.

From the research that I've done, the lowest age for electric fence training I've seen is 4 months and the highest age is 6 months. I would ere on the side of caution and not begin electric fence training until your puppy was 6 months old. This will allow the dog to mature and grow larger in size. Electric fences ARE NOT for small dogs.

Secondly, puppies don't respond to commands under 3 months, and since your puppy is only four months old, he's still in the early stages of understanding. Be patient, and your dog will learn to come soon enough.

thanks very much. Jake is a large boned german shepherd and likes to follow his 7 1/2 year old sister, a chessie into the woods. We have decided that at least 6 months. The fence has worked well for my other dogs.
