going to a private club for dinner. How formal should I dress?

golf club? early dinner or late dinner? At the clubs i've belonged to up until 6 oclock slacks and a sport shirt. After 6 sports jacket or suit.. Also keep your elbows off the table, the member will be charged 50 bucks if you put them on the table. Also don't offer to pay for dinner. It isn't appropriate. The member has a monthly allowance for food.. You can leave a tip for the wait staff. 25% is fair.

I've never heard of a country club or a private club charging $50 for putting elbows on the table LOL. I've belonged to some of the best clubs in the Country and never heard of such a thing :) For women, there is an elegant way they do this (elbows) on the table.

AND.... In France, the general rule is, (and not just at meal tables), keep your hands in view. I suspect the reason for this so that there can be no suspicion of any type of hankypanky under the table! LOL
