Do I have to take the Bible literally to believe in Jesus? If so, why?

Silfox:

Several aspects of the Bible account are problematic if taken literally. For example, there is no mountain tall enough for Satan to show Jesus "all the kingdoms of the world and their glory." Nor is it likely that Jesus would allow Satan literally to ‘take him along into the holy city’ or to station him "upon the battlement of the temple." (Matthew 4:5-8) Evidently, then, some sort of vision was involved. However it was performed, Satan’s temptation of Christ was real. Jesus’ refusal to succumb to such temptation demonstrated his unbreakable integrity.Clearly, then, faith in the Bible is not blind credulity or wishful thinking but is founded on reason and abundant evidence.—Hebrews 11:1.

Linda:

No. You can choose to believe without ever reading the Bible. Besides, many of Jesus' teachings were in parables. They weren't meant to be taken literally. Other parts like the Ten Commandments are meant to be taken very literally.

Lovely:

Is that your churches doctrine Linda? ;-)

Linda:

You can find my Church Doctrine at www.lds.org
As with most of my answers they are my opinion. When I state Church Doctrine I usually say My Church teaches...
Hey Blade, good to see ya!

Whipsaw:

No, I am an atheist who truly enjoys reading the words of Jesus. I disregard the rest of the bible out of hand, with the possible exception of some of Solomon's works. I suppose most christians would say I don't believe in Jesus because I don't accept him as my savior, but I care little about that. Jesus said and did some great things, and managed to influence all of humanity down to this day.

JemaH:

interesting.

Linda:

This Christian would concur that you believe in Jesus and his teachings whether you consider him your personal savior or not.. I think there are many great teachings in various religions and outside of religion. And I commend you for seeking out goodness in the world.

Whipsaw:

Thanx, Linda
=)

Lovely:

No, but it will help to read the bible so you can determine why you must accept Christ for your salvation. According to scripture there is only one way to God and that is through Christ the Son.

Linda:

I think the Bible is the greatest instruction manual ever written. I also thnk its the greatest self help / well being book ever written. And the best parenting book! I love the Bible!!
Good to see you Blade!

Tangent Bill:

Jesus wants you to take His word literally because most of the Bible is meant to be taken literally. If you trust in Jesus, you will trust His word. There are many evidences for the Bible, such as fulfilled prophecy, scientific evidence, manuscript evidence, historical evidence, archeological evidence, and the changed lives of believers. Jesus literally rose from the dead, there is literally a heaven and hell, God literally created the heavens and the earth, etc.

NUCKLEJAMMER:

The Bible is Gods word to man. It is not a story book. It is a guide book to life and also tells us how God is going to restore this earth to a Paradise. Jesus is the son of God and his role in God's purpose is to rule as King from the Heavens over this earth.

Valentin Alsina News:

I look at it this way----the more I get to know Jesus Christ---the more I want to read the bible---the more I get from the Bible----when it comes to the bible---you get to a point where it's not "have to" any more---Every word in that book is an honor to view---it was written for me---it is such a blessing to have

FreddyBoy1:

Of course! The Bible (word of God) is the only way to know the REAL Jesus. His word declares who he is. The world loves to imagine him as they want him to be. But if you want to know him as he is, you must read his word! That's why it is such an awesome gift to us in the earth...Those who serve their imaginary "Jesus" will perish in hell when the real one comes for his church...count on it...
