Do you know how to interpret the scriptures of the Bible?

If you want to just leave a little quip as an answer that is fine, I realize that many people do not understand this scripture much less the rest of the Bible:Proverbs 3:5 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding.I am interested in the input of, and the interaction with those who are willing to listen – with discernment – to a teaching I heard today:Do you understand the difference between the explicit and the implicit when interpreting scriptures?I heard a very powerful and enlightening teaching today from R.C. Sproul; one of the most intelligent and respected apologists I know of. http://www.ligonier.org/rym.phpUnder “Audio Archive” choose “the Explicit and the Implicit”.The following comment has a breakdown of the material covered and the time segment of its teaching:
Angelo:

2:40 – 4:55 explains the difference between explicit and implicit.

4:55 – 5:50 The “Trinity” is implicitly implied.

5:50 – 11:40 Implications that conflict with other explicit scriptures – Women covering their heads because of the angels - The Nephilim – The lineage of Seth and Cain.

11:40 – 17:25 Direct conflict of implication with the explicit – Can people choose to be saved?

17:25 - 23:10 Words and word meanings – Salvation by giving birth - Sanctification of an unbelieving spouse – Salvation by Faith alone.

CONSERVATIVEATHEIST:

I really would like to listen to it but it's too noisy here at the moment. I have but this Q in my alerts but since you didn't tag it conversational it may get pulled. I guess I should bookmark the website and listen when I have the kids asleep for the evening. If you get dinged on this one, please re-post. Perhaps I can catch you on messenger with a few others and we can discuss like we have done in the past.

Angelo:

"since you didn't tag it conversational " look again...

CONSERVATIVEATHEIST:

sorry, i didn't see the tag... cool though. I can get back to you with an answer later when I can actually hear anything other than lil people memorizing lines for a school play and times tables being memorized.

Odysseus:

scriptures are interpenetrated differently depending on the branch of christianity, which is why I struggle to follow any particular denomination.
A particular denomination could go hundreds of years believing in a specific interpretation then all of a sudden a group of theologians can come along, start a new religion and change the meaning of the scriptures to suit their own agenda.
I am still going to listen to your radio link.

Angelo:

And I am truly - extremely - interested in the input of those who have carefully listened to this teaching...I think much of the dissention between the existing denominations of the Church would be minimized if this information was strictly applied...

Angelo:

Od - Thank you! I very much look forward to your input and opinion - as Jackie stated - maybe we can get a discussion going on MSN Messenger later - we will add anyone that wants to participate - shall we say 7:00 Pacific - 10:00 Eastern Time? I will try my best to make sure I am back on by then - have to go for now...

Odysseus:

I doubt I will make it, That would make it around 1am NZDT.

CONSERVATIVEATHEIST:

Sorry Ody. hope you don't my nickname for you. If I can I will copy the entire conversation and save it to email you. I am not sure what your religious background is but you have mentioned your wife's that I remember. Would you mind telling me? Just curious?

CONSERVATIVEATHEIST:

darn it all. I missed a word. I meant mind my nickname. Forgiven?

Valentin Alsina News:

This is how I interpret scriptures.
1) Revelation from the Holy Spirit
2) Study of the Scriptures----Using various translations and study tools.
3) Receiving from the 5 fold Ministry.
The Holy Spirit will always agree with what is written in the scriptures. But He unlocks the revelation for you.
When you study----it cause the Word of God to become a part of you.---Also by help of the holy Spirit. What ever you study cannot override the Holy Spirit or the Word of God.
Five fold---these are offices/gifts placed in the church for the edifying and equipping of the Body. You can learn alot about the Word from them. Again---what they say does not override the Holy Spirit or the Word of God. They must be in agreement.

Valentin Alsina News:

4) Most importantly---applying the Word to my life. That is one of the best ways to understand the scriptures. When you live it and use it. Don't just let it sit on a page----DO IT.

Angelo:

Very true. I also know that having the gift of discernment from the Holy Spirit is how He equips us to understand and apply what is revealed to us...

Cutekannan:

Anything that is subject to "interpretation" is automatically subject to error. The Bible is a good example. Same for the Koran and the Book of Mormon.

Angelo:

Yes - there are rules for interpretation that need to be followed very strictly or misinterpretation is likely...

Rich:

You are of course assuming that the person who made the rules of interpretation did not misinterpret it in the first place.

Angelo:

It can be difficult - for example some of the Bible was written in a poetic style which does not translate well. Sometimes the only way to get a "real" feel for something is to study it in the original text...

Meri:

It is nice to see a believer who acknowledges explicit and implicit juxtaposed to interpretation.

Angelo:

I have understood it for some time, but found this teaching to be exceptional. I hope it helps others realize how easy it is to reach conclusions that are far from actually being Biblical...

Russ:

huh...see the underlines?
hello Anejo.

Meri:

@SC - I'm encouraged you are that type of believer, and hope you continue further to be more enlightened on your spiritual path.

@Russ...darn, no last name for you...LOL..Hola!

Russ:

Que tal?

Meri:

poco...preparing my shopping list for moose stroganoff and wild pig sausage pizza.

Goodbye, Cruel World:

I let Scripture interpret Scripture. First would be to read in context. Understanding that, remember that a passage may not say everything about the topic but the interpretation cannot say less. Consider other passages on the same topic. If you think there is a contradiction, the problem is probably with the interpreter.

I also try to understand the circumstances of the writing. This would be the extended, historical context.

Those are just two things to keep in mind when studying Scripture.

Angelo:

Absolutely - good points.

No skinny:

In my 47 years as a Christian and reading and studying the scriptures the Spirit of God who lives in my spirit is my teacher and guide and since He Inspired Holy men to write the Word of God He directs my spirit in the understanding of that which he inspired. I have read many books by different authors and listened to many preachers expound the scriptures and the best way to understand is to pray as you study for the Teacher and Inspirer of the Word of God to open the word of God and let you understand for the bible is of no private interpretation, so for the sake of the Truth let him be your teacher for he knows what he had written.

Angelo:

Well said.

Amen

Probstatsgirl:

No, read and reread until make sense ......that is interpretation. Follow, do not ask questions.

Angelo:

Sounds a little cultish to me...

Probstatsgirl:

........and do not lean on own understanding. That is the interpretation above I could come up with.

Angelo:

ok - I understand what you meant now...what it means is that we should consider what others in the church have to say about the scriptures - not that we should necessarily blindly follow what we hear. I have learned a considerable amount through study on my own, and have had many "blanks" filled in by listening to other teachings.

Probstatsgirl:

Scarecrow 60, Until we realize real power within us, we cannot get rid of speculations, translations and interpretations. Not asking questions is against our nature. We human have nature of curiosity, I believe we should not depress that to get further in life. Learning from scriptures and other preachers is OK, but following them blindfolding is not good. Which can easily mislead you.

Fredy:

It is through the Holy Spirit who came to live inside of me from the very moment I accepted Jesus Christ as my very personal Savior (in Oct. 1991) that I am able to understand any of the scriptures. I am a student of truth who will forever be seeking to learn and understand more of God's word. Without His Holy Spirit, I would never have had any hope of understanding His word, nor would I have acquired the capacity to accept His word as truth without the gentle counseling of His Holy Spirit. It is impossible for anyone to understand the Bible and accept it as God's word without the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. This is why so many who attend ( Christ centered) church services have a problem with understanding and believing what they're hearing. They have not wholeheartedly accepted Jesus Christ as their Savior. As well, without faith, it is not only impossible to please God, it is, as well, impossible to accept His word as truth without faith. I live my life in such a way as to glorify God to the very best of my ability. In this, I do not indulge in that which He blatantly forbids. And I try to not to indulge in anything that I understand will not bring honor and glory to his name; the name of the Lord which I am happy to profess as often as I am led to do so.

Angelo:

Well said. But I think there may be a bit more to it discernment is also a gift of the spirit that He gives as He pleases, which is required to understand what is read. Also consider:

Ezekiel 11:19 And I will give them one heart, and a new spirit I will put within them. I will remove the heart of stone from their flesh and give them a heart of flesh,

Joel 2:28 "And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my Spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions.

Mark 14:38 Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak."

Galatians 5:17 For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do.

We are still faced with the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life...

Fredy:

Discernment is what I was trying to point out. It is truly a gift of the spirit which God gave me from the moment I accepted Christ as my Savior and was immediately empowered to discontinue acting out as a lesbian. Thank you for helping me remember the word.

Angelo:

That is phenomenal! You have a great testimony and are a terrific witness for the Lord.

Liz:

I am so excited there is so much going on in my life right now do you want to know ,I am on the verge of hanging up the cigarettes for good I can feel it done soley and only by the word of god ,I am choosing a new line of employment in life and contemplating school, and to top it all of i can pray and ask for understanding pick up the bible and make connections ,understanding truly ,interpreting the scriptures are hard and it has to be done carefully and accurately ,I always try anyway....anyway send that link to my email will you

Angelo:

That is excellent! I smoked 1 1/2 packs a day until I quit cold turkey in 1989 have not gone back to them since - it is wonderful not to have that habit! Sometimes change is needed - the scriptures refer to it as pruning on one type of change that we see. I'm glad you're getting back to school it is always a good thing to refresh our knowledge or add to it. I love the way the Holy Spirit works; He knows what we are ready for and reveals just that as we spend time in His Word. I'll get the link to you - he is an exceptional teacher, I think you will find all of his teachings interesting...

Lovely:

It is the same to me as the what the OT Jews recited every hour everyday in the Shema and Christ verified in Mark 12:28-31. Trust God-no matter what or who tells you not to do so, and love them because they don't know any better than to believe otherwise.

Angelo:

Yes - a good way to go about things.

Alex:
