Are teachers failing ?

Violent pupils and students, poor literacy, poor number of graduates and importation of graduates to fill the jobs that fellow citizens are unable to perform due to failing education. To name but a few. So, are teachers failing and why?

Kimi:

And I think you are a troll. Why else your QnA score is minus?

Linda:

No. Generally speaking I think the parents are failing.

Teachers are supposed to teach academics it is the responsibility of the parent to teach their children morals and self control and to motivate them to do their jobs as students and learn.

Kimi:

Thank you for that Linda, I agree some parents are not good partners in the education of their children.

Linda:

Guess I should have read the other answers first and just voted, but I don't like for my opinion or answer to be influenced by the others. Looks like its a general consensus here so far...

Kimi:

I appreciate your contribution very much, thank you.

NANA:

I agree Linda. I actually know a person who would not let anyone teach her young daughter anything, no ABC's, no counting or spelling, nothing period. She said it was the teacher's job to teach the kids, not the parents job. She was the one who would fly into a rage every time the principal called about her son, the bully. I worked in the school kitchen and saw this kid throw another one up against the wall. When the mother got the call she tore into the principal and the kid lied through his teeth. I told him I saw it and he'd better 'fess up or I'd tell. He threatened me. His mom would never have believed me either. How are teachers supposed to deal with kids like that?

Gbob_north:

I agree if the parents did their job right the kids would at least sit down and pretend to pay attention.

Afshan:

it's the whole system...parents who do not support the teachers, and teachers who are overburdened with large classrooms, etc etc. The list goes on and on. The laws these days make many parents afraid to discipline their kids and the kids know it. The schools, likewise, cannot really discipline them other than things like suspension which most kids rather like. The kids are also being pushed more....kindergartin these days is pretty equal to what we learned in 2nd grade and they are pushed more every year to learn more at an earlier age. As far as graduation...most kids are aware that in order to get a really good paying job these days, one must have college....and a whole lot of kids know they have no way of going to college so they develop a "why try, why bother" attitude. They are told...financial aide...well, your student cannot obtain financial aide if you made a few too many pennies that year...and yet you probably cannot afford college tuition without it....where does that leave your child? Then they turn around and see the kid with wealthy parents get a full scholarship because the kid's an athelete and his parents, although they could well afford it, don't pay a dime. A lot of them feel beaten before they even start and I'm sure a lot of teachers feel that way too.

Kimi:

Excellent answer, thank you for that.

Gray wolf:

I will agree that some teachers are failing but the main failure is that of the parents. A lot of parents have remove themselves from the responsibility of educating their children and put it all on the teachers. The teachers get approx. 1 hour or less a day to teach a child along with 20 or more others. We parents have much more time to help teach our child and should get our heads off of our butt and be parents and not friends.

Kimi:

Hi there. I agree that the education of our children is a partnership but the role of parents should only by as a reinforcement and not as initiators of knowledge. Thanks for that graywolf and although I just saw your questions on Islam I thank you for your sense of fairness and candor.

MamaV:

It is not always the teachers fault. A lot has to do with the individual state curriculum. The States mandates a certain curriculum, but then tests with a completely other curriculum, for State Standardized Testing. that was never even taught to the students in the first place. Also, parents are no longer teaching the basic principals of respect and morals. Most children, do not know how to use words like please and thank you. They do not know proper hygiene, They do not know how to share, and the do not understand the concept of patience. When teachers, have to start teaching manners, just to attempt to get control over a classroom, it takes away from the academics. Some parents just do not care whether Johnny can read, or whether Jane can add or subtract. They look at school as eight hours of free babysitting, and their attitude is that while their children are in school, it is the schools problem. Some parents do not care if their child/children go to school each and every day, and just find it easier to let them stay home, then to drag them off to school each day. There is no unified support system. Teachers, must be able to spot victims of child physical abuse, child mental, abuse, and child neglect. Report these to an already over burden Child Protection agency, and deal with the complete denial from the parents, and hope for the best. In an overcrowded classroom, teachers must be able to deal with the mentally disabled children, as well as the learning disabled children, and keep everything, and everyone in their charge on task. There are mounds and mounds of redundant paper work to complete for each child. Yes you are correct, there are some teachers, who have no business even being in a classroom, and they are lousy teachers, the districts can not fire them, because of Unions and laws that protect them. And there is no one standing in line to do their jobs, because the pay is so lousy. Before anyone goes and starts pointing fingers a

BMC:

Bad educational systems are a product of poor administration. SOME teachers are failing and the fact they are teaching goes right back to the administration.

NANA:

Yes they are. Some try to teach; but, with very little parental support it gets harder and harder for them. I've seen students who were real bullies and their parents argued with the principal and thought their kids were being picked on at school. When I was in school there was always the thought of the "Board of Education" (A.K.A. paddle) hanging in the principal's office; that deterred a lot of kids from acting up. Most of us knew that if we got into trouble at school we would be in worse trouble at home. A lot of parents aren't strict enough anymore and a lot of teachers have lost their desire to teach. Teaching is a good job, 9 months of work for a 12 months salary and the benefits are really good.

Kimi:

Thank you trish and I agree with that lack of deterrence is a big factor.

BUD 28:

Teachers often fail because parents and administrators won't demand acceptable behavior from
students. Think of your own experiences in public school.

ADAM:

The few teacher I have talked to recently are really not prepared to teach and have very little knowledhe og Geography and History. I think teacher todys are not too well educated. Therefore they sometime may lose the respect of their students.

MamaV:

Yes you are correct. I have worked with teachers who actually have a PHD in education but have no idea on how to apply what they learned to actually teach in a classroom They are great test takers, but have no idea what they are doing, and trust me kids are like dogs, they smell fear. lol and will take advantage of the situation. :) This is a sad case of just because you are educated, doesn't mean you know what your doing. :)

Home Econ:

We can't blame them for that. There's so many factors affects student's education like peers and society, family problems, bad influences, etc. I think it should start within the family. If the student are trained with love and support by his families, he will go on the right path.
