Where is the best, most painless, quickest place to shoot a cat?

My cat is terminally ill and there are no vets around my farm that can euthanize her. I plan to use a small caliber pistol but i dont know where to shoot. I'm sure this question will get flagged but i'm at wits end and have no idea what to do and i knew qna could help me out. Thanksplease understand this is a serious question so serious answers only please.
Twisted sal:

When my dad accidentally ran over one of my mum's cats and he realized it was too badly injured to survive, he used a hatchet and chopped its head off (we had a stable with a wood chopping block by the garage).
That might actually be better than shooting it. And safer for you.

Twisted sal:

Whoops, meant to be an answer.

Stitchybutt:

I'm really sorry I did not realize that you were actually serious about this question. This is one that I can not answer but to say I have had to do it myself. I had nightmares for a long time. you do not want to be responsible for taking life of any kind.

Fra:

I have no answer, I just wanted to say I am terribly sorry that it has come to this. I wish there were some other way for you and your cat. I am very sorry. I really hope this does not cause you nightmares, its not often that doing something humane will result in images that you can't later remove, or in nightmares, but this could be one of them. It may be worth going out of your way to find a vet to avoid that? I don't know. Again, I'm sorry about your furbaby.

David:

thanks everyone the vet wants to do one more test so my fingers are crossed he wants me to bring in a urine and fecal sample to confirm. Hopefully he was wrong. If i drive for a few hrs i might be able to get a second opinion which i am planning to do and if necessary put to sleep there if they can do it

Sun357:

I really feel for you, I live on a farm to and I understand that stuff like this happens even though I can't deal with it, my husband gets to do that part. I am going to say in the head because that seems most logical, probably between the eyes. or temple area.. and all this depends on how good a shot you are. if your not a good shot there is a spot on the body not sure where though as I said I have never had to do this and my husband is asleep. I am even having a hard time thinking about it to type this answer. I am really sorry about your cat.

David:

thank you, I'm a pretty good shot but i hate sound like a sick o but do i shoot execution style? How does your husband do it. If its to graphic please have him reply.

Thats what i was thinking, in the head, hold it a ft away from her forehead so the muzzle flash doesnt singe the hair on her head.

I always had a feeling sense i was a kid i would have to put her down my self just didnt really think i would have to put my little buddy down.

Sun357:

I really am not to comfortable talking about it.. just answering this was hard enough. my husband is in the bed and won't be able to answer you.. drive the cat to the vet in the morning if you have to go to a different town. my vet doesn't charge me a dime to do something like this as long as you take it back home with you to bury it.

Turquoise:

Vets want $$$, use a 22 in the head. And no thats not cruel to end the suffering of the cat. Your on a farm, in the county probably, so just do and try not to suffer over it. I know it's tough but it is the right thing to do.

AWritersNotes:

Is shooting the only option? Seriously, is there no other way?
Dumb as it may sound, I would consider some kind of overdose on pills mixed in its food, would that be possible or not feasible?

Thomas:

Take him to the ASPCA, Animal Control or the HUMANE society and you will have to turn your cat over and they will euthanize him. I understand your tuff position. But please do not use a gun. Not only can it cause more pain to the kitty, but it may hurt you as well. I wish you the very best.

Sun357:

Very good answer Doreen, and Hi :)

AWritersNotes:

Great idea!

Thomas:

Thank you, and hello!!!:)

David:

didnt think of that one i will see if i can get a hold of them. Thanks

LadyB:

What?? I assure you a properly placed shot is virtually painless - and a firearm is no more dangerous than a stapler assuming you know how to use it.

Whipsaw:

I have a cat that was shot in the top center of the head with a small caliber pistol four years ago. She is alive and doing pretty well considering. I think that is all I can say about that.

The most effective place I have found to shoot a small animal is directly behind the ear, aiming towards the centerline of the body and forward into the skull. I am very sorry you have to do this, it is not an easy thing.

Grunt49:

If I ever get sick and there's no hope left can I count on you. Sounds like you know what you're talking about. I wouldn't do that to you I have contingency plans in place should that ever happened. Not going to lay around being a burden and having someone change my diaper, it makes me shudder to think about it.

Whipsaw:

I'm with you on that one Grunt. I have worked in a nursing home and have no intention of living in one if I can help it. I hope to jog up a mountain and let exercise do its job.

2 Cents:

My mother had to kill something one time, a goat I think, and was told to put an imaginary line between its eyes to it's ears, crossing the forehead, and then shooting it there with a ..22. She did it and it worked out fine. I don't know why she had to kill it though. but on a farm that happen a lot. A pet can get into all kinds of trouble, and must be put down to ease it's pain, such as when a horse steps in a gopher hole and breaks it's leg. Ranchers of livestock often find themselves doing it.
If you can bring yourself to it, then tell the cat that you will miss it and always remember it, and you will meet again in the next life, and thank it for the hours of pleasure and fun it gave you. Animals know more than we think, sometimes, and ask for relief... The cat has already forgiven you, you know.

Sun357:

your answer brought tears to my eyes, very good answer, I had to put a dog down about a month or so ago and I let the vet do it and it was still very hard, I did talk to her before just like you described and I did feel that she forgave me before hand. she was in so much pain its all I knew to do.

Stitchybutt:

Shoot him right in front of your local police station so you can just walk on in and make yourself at home, because that is where you will end up, I'm just saying though ! I don't know man that is a tuff one.

David:

stupid answer

Stitchybutt:

I did not realize you were serious.

David:

didnt see this part eh?

"please understand this is a serious question so serious answers only please."

Eve:

Man that's messed up. You really expect people to believe there are no vets willing to euthanize your cat? If you must know...use a large caliber. 12 GA down through the top of the head . Right in the middle...don't want to miss any brain. Make damn sure you get it right. Better hope your neighbors don't find out, they will call animal control and you will get charged with animal cruelty.

David:

no neighbors for a while and no vets either the one we do have said he didnt have the tools for it

Eve:

Wow that's a tough call. Just make sure you do it right. You absolutely do not want that cat to suffer. Beware of small calibers like a .22 They are notorious for bouncing off bones. If you don't have something bigger, try to borrow something from a friend with a little more punch> Sorry about your cat and best of luck.

David:

well i have a .380, 357 magnum and 38 spc what would you recommend? I want her to feel no pain but dont want to destroy her (blow her to pieces) ive never killed anything before, this is my first pet.

Eve:

Probably the .380 or .38. Even still there will be some head damage. Honestly, I prefer the answer about driving to another town to find a different vet. Seems way more humane. I have never heard of a vet. that didn't have the equipment to euthanize. Dude it's a needle and some animal tranq. or sedative. Do you really want little Fluffy's last moments to be so violent. A bright flash and loud noise(no matter how brief). How about a nice painless deep sleep leading to coma and then death. Sounds way better dosen't it? Your cat would do it for you!

Joe:

the tuth man thers always the head it quick and pain less....but u shoul still try to find a vet ,,,,,,but if i were u and i had choice i would shoot it in the head that all i can say

Grunt49:

I had to do this once to a dog I really loved, like you there weren't any vets around. It will be very hard my suggestion is to find someone not attached to the animal. A shaky hand is not what will deliver a quick end. If you can't find someone a 22 rifle with hollow points at point-blank range in the front of the head will end it more humanely. Be sure this is done on the ground, not some hard surface. Sorry for your predicament!

Grunt49:

Not everyone lives close to a vet or shelter to handle a problem like this. What I did still haunts me to this day but it was the right thing to do!

LadyB:

If you haven't already shot the thing, read Whips post good information there. But I would also advise toss in this old wives tale from my great grandmother, in regard to chickens - she always said "If you pity them you wouln't kill them the with the first swing." Or in your case, try to shut out the emotional aspect of this and be cold, if you don't do this right it's going to pull hard on your heart strings.

TonyaAnn:

Wow sounds messy no matter how you shoot it.

Daryl:

For some of us on the farm it is much less crual to give you pet his favorite treat...thank him for his loyality and affection...wait till he is sleeping or unaware and shoot just above the eye line with 22.

My dog is suffering enough with out loading her up driveing her to to town and having her spend her last hours with strangers.

Very hard to do...but its not about whats best for you,

Daryl:

Nicki...the best dog I ever had...I remember coming out in the yard one morning to find her with a coyote sittng next to her she was protecting the house and family from what she determind a threat to our kids...if the coyote would move she would growl..she was waitng for me to come and dispose of this threat. She did this on more than one occaion. She would gaurd the yard when my kids were out playing. If the coyotes approached the yard...day or night she was there to protect us...chasing them away with no fear for her own life. They would try to trick her to follow them into the bush but she would stop 100 yards from the bush and come back to protect her family. On one occasion she caught distemper when defending her family...that was a two year battle to recovery. She was an amazing and loyal friend. I know its not possable for all of you to take care of our friends like this..but Nicki deserved to leave this world like she lived.. with dignity... a thankyou a good hug and three bullets from a semi auto...well placed...she acually wagged her tail in her last 15 sec...as if to say thankyou for ending my suffering and good bye. Good bye my freind..Nicki!
