how do i time my honda 350x atc correctly?

i have been struggling with my motor the valves keep hitting i need some advice on the timing procedure of the atc its a 85 86

as a general rule when you have been having troube with timing the best thing to do is to start from scratch. set the motor at top dead center and make sure that the timing marks are lined up and re assemble any covers that you have removed and give it a kick or three and adjust from there good luck
